DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Appalachia\, a Smithsonian Affiliate\, invites the community to celebrate the arrival of spring and the rich cultural heritage of the region with their annual Sheep Shearing Days\, Friday\, April 24\, and Friday\, May 1\, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. \nGuests will have the opportunity to witness every step of the wool-making process and learn first-hand how pioneers turned fleece into woven goods. Sheep shearing is the centerpiece of an event that includes a host of pioneer demonstrations\, including sheep herding\, dollmaking\, basketmaking\, coopering\, wood carving\, chair caning\, and dozens more. Interactive activities for kids include spelling bees\, painting\, an animal meet-and-greet\, shape-note singing\, old-fashioned games\, storytelling\, and more. \nThe event will also feature live music\, a variety of food options\, and a tour of the museum itself\, which features three dozen historic log structures\, exhibit halls brimming with thousands of authentic Appalachian artifacts\, working gardens\, and farm animals. \nTickets for Sheep Shearing Days are available at museumofappalachia.org. SUMMARY:ORCMA Spring Classic 5K & Fun Run
DESCRIPTION:Join the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association for the 2nd annual Spring Fun Run at A.K. Bissell Park on March 29! Whether you choose to run\, walk\, or stroll\, you’ll enjoy uplifting classical music along the route. This fun-filled event supports ORCMA’s youth programs\, including the Free Family Concert and Adolf Summer Strings Program. Costumes are encouraged to make the day even more festive! \nThe 5K course consists of three 1.1-mile loops\, while the Fun Run is a single loop. Participants can park at the Civic Center or Public Library\, and restrooms will be available inside the Civic Center and in portable units outside. Early arrival is recommended due to other events taking place in the area. \nRegistration for the 5K is $30 (with an early bird rate of $25 through January 31)\, while the Fun Run is $15 (or $10 early bird). Please note that there are no bib transfers or refunds. Bib pickup will be available on race morning from 7:00–8:45 AM (until 8:15 AM for Fun Run participants). \nAll participants will receive a custom race shirt (while supplies last) and a swag bag\, and prizes will be awarded to top finishers and best costume winners. Enjoy pre- and post-race refreshments\, including coffee from Calamity’s Coffee\, hot cocoa\, and donuts from Donut Palace. \nAwards will be announced around 10:15 AM for the 1st Place Male/Female Overall\, the top three finishers in three age categories (18-under\, 19-39\, and 40+)\, and the best costumes in both races.
