SUMMARY:Meet the Artist
DESCRIPTION:The Appalachian Arts Craft Center will be hosting Fiber and Clay artist Liza Jane Alexander on August 2nd from 10 to 11:30 a.m..  Liza has been creating fiber baskets in East Tennessee since childhood. Her meditative coiling process allows color and form to unfold organically\, celebrating life through every stitch. Recently\, she began incorporating her own hand-formed clay embellishments into her designs\, blending earthy texture with vibrant fiber artistry. \nLiza Jane’s baskets are found in homes across the globe. As part of her international art initiative\, “108 Baskets for Healing & Protection of Earth\,” she invites basket owners to share where they’re taking their baskets\, contributing to a global tapestry of healing\, intention\, and connection. \nLiza’s necklaces feature her hand-made clay medallions and beads embellished with pearl and stone beads on knotted leather. Each medallion is symbolic of the desire to move through the world with the intention of healing and protection for our precious planet. She also offers beautiful earrings and bracelets that include her hand made clay beads and calls her jewelry line Pearl & Bone\, Clay & Stone. \nVisitors will have the opportunity to view her richly textured Appalachian Rag Baskets\, made from repurposed t-shirts as a tribute to Appalachian ingenuity and resilience. \nThe exhibit will remain on display in our gallery through August 24. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Guests will be able to meet the artist\, hear about her journey\, and witness demonstrations of her basket coiling technique. Light refreshments will be provided.

SUMMARY:Shaping the Valley: The Visionaries Behind the TVA
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fascinating afternoon with Dr. Avigail Sachs\, Interim Associate Dean for Research and Professor of Architecture at the University of Tennessee\, Knoxville\, as she discusses her groundbreaking book on the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). Created in 1933 under the New Deal\, the TVA was the nation’s largest single agency of its kind\, transforming one of the most impoverished and isolated regions into a model of modern planning. Beyond building dams and providing power\, the TVA shaped communities\, scenic routes\, visitor centers\, and a thriving recreation industry. Dr. Sachs highlights the work of the “atelier TVA”\, a visionary team of architects\, landscape architects\, and planners who blended science\, design\, and social goals into one of the most ambitious environmental projects in American history. With personal ties to Norris and a passion for architectural history\, Dr. Sachs brings unique insight into this legacy of innovation and regional transformation.
