5 PLACES TO VISIT WITHIN 50 MILES OF ANDERSON COUNTY

One of the great things about Anderson County is its location and proximity to all of East Tennessee’s great attractions. In addition to being within a day’s drive of 75% of the U.S. population, our convenience to Interstates 75 and 40 make it easy to visit many surrounding areas. East Tennessee is full of beautiful and interesting places to visit, so we’ve made a list of 5 places to visit within 50 miles or less of Anderson County.

Cumberland Gap National Historical Park – The Cumberland Gap is a pass through the long ridge of the Cumberland Mountains near the junction of Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee. It is famous in American history for its role as a key passageway through the lower central Appalachians by buffalo, Native Americans, long hunters and pioneers just to name a few. Modern day explorers and travelers stand in awe at this great gateway and the many miles of trails and scenic features found in the park. Cumberland Gap National Historical Park is only about 50 miles from Anderson County and makes a great day trip.

Downtown Knoxville – Shopping, dining, art…you name it, Downtown Knoxville has it. And lucky for us in Anderson County, it’s just a hop, skip and jump away. Explore over 50 local retailers from boutiques to artisan goods. Whether you want to get dressed up for fine dining or grab a burger on the go, the dining scene in Downtown Knoxville will not disappoint. On the first Friday of each month, the streets of Downtown come alive for a casual evening of experiencing art in all forms. Explore galleries, studios, exhibits and more. We recommend a visit to their Riverwalk district as well. It’s great for walking, biking and enjoying a beautiful view of the Tennessee River. Downtown Knoxville is roughly 15-20 miles from Anderson County making it an easy place to visit often.

Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary – Experience one of America’s most unique tourist destinations just a short drive from Anderson County (25 miles). The Historic Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary who once housed James Earl Ray, the assassin of Dr. Martin Luther King now features self-guided tours, paranormal tours, a moonshine distillery, a restaurant, concerts and more. A trip to Brushy will be an experience like no other! While you visit the prison, we highly recommend checking out Frozen Head State Park located just a few short miles away. The park is nestled in the Cumberland Mountains with beautiful views and great hiking.

Bush’s Beans – “See Where That Beautiful Bean Co. Was Born.” We’ve all heard of Bush’s Beans, but now you can check out their visitor center nestled in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains and learn all about their history. You’ll get to explore the museum, general store and enjoy some home cookin’ and southern specialties at the Bush’s Family Café. Be sure to save room for a slice of their famous Pinto Bean Pie! The Visitor Center is only about 50 miles from Anderson County and an easy trip down Interstate 40.

Sweetwater Valley Farms – Say Cheese! Sweetwater Valley Farm is one of a kind and truly a special place to visit. Located in the heart of southeast Tennessee’s dairy rich Sweetwater Valley, its home to some of the most delicious cheese you’ll ever try and a beautiful farm to visit. Habanero, jalapeno, fiery fiesta…think of a cheese flavor you’d like to try and they most likely have it. In addition to touring the farm, you can stop in their café for a delicious grilled cheese and milkshake.
